The festival which raised money for park renovations included a Lil Ms. Historical Princess Pageant, live music by the Great American Boxcar Chorus, food and craft vendors, children's games, a pumpkin patch and more. Board members, Tim Akers and Ronnie Floyd presented the resolutions.

Richards 4-H students are no stranger to these meetings, and this month they spent time learning about pumpkins and all things squash. Mandi Wrobleski leads the group and usually teaches subjects such as goat tying, horsemanship, and pecans. But as with any great fall season, pumpkins steal the show. Instead of her usual topics-4-H attendees learned new terms for pumpkins such as Warty Goblin, Jack be Little, and Fairy Tale for pumpkin types.

Read morePortulaca oleracea, purslane, is a highly nutritious annual succulent. Evidence of its use by man was found in archeological sites going back to at least the seventh century BCE. It grows in many parts of the world including Grimes County. Purslane is low-growing, forming dense mats about 6 inches high with a spread of up to 2 feet. The succulent stems and leaves are filled with clear mucilaginous sap. Clear sap is an important identification point as there are similar looking plants with white sap, inedible look-a-likes.

It takes many volunteers to pull this fundraiser off and it is amazing how this group comes together as a team. As a resident of White Hall, I am very thankful for this group!
