Iola Food Pantry open Sept. 16
The Keith Civic Club monthly meeting was held a week later due to work being done on the Keith Community Center. The meeting began with a covered dish meal that was enjoyed by all present. The new sign in front of the building was certainly admired by all. Work done on the ceiling really looks good. Lots of work has been done and there is still work that needs to be done.
The 75th annual meeting of Martins Prairie Baptist Church Cemetery Association was held Sept. 3. The meeting was called to order by Dexter Lavender, the group’s president. Brother Stanton Hill provided the opening prayer. The pianist was Sharon Lavender and special music was provided by John Briscoe. Betty Beene provided history of some of the Confederate Veterans buried in the cemetery. Their names are Hampton W. Carter, Robert A. Breland, John M. Crenshaw, John E. Horton, John David Keith, Reubin W. Keith, Henry L. Flynt, William M. Lyons and John C. Thomas. There are others who will be recognized next year.
Adevotional was delivered by Brother Kent May. Floral Tributes were given by Sherry Terry. In memory was provided by Geoff and Julie Horn, monetary tributes were by Darlene Lavender. There was a short business meeting. New officers elected are President Richard Timm, Vice President Jim Candler, Director Don Keith, Secretary Nina Reynolds and Treasurer Sherry Terry.
The names of those who passed away since last year are Ricky Scott Rice, Joyce Dudley Rice, Gordon Roscoe, Dorothy Beene, Ruby Lavender Stuckey and Nan Keith Stephens. May their memories be forever blessed. Following the meeting lunch was served in the fellowship hall. Everyone had a wonderful time.
Area residents were sorry to learn of the death of Carolyn Kellogg who passed away Monday, Aug. 28, in Bryan. Her funeral was held in Evergreen Cemetery Tuesday, Sept. 5. She was born Nov. 2, 1937 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Red and Mamie Ogletree. She married C.A. Tony Kellogg and they were married for 65 years. They had two sons, Kevin Guy and Kelly Gregg, several grandchildren and a great grandson. The funeral was conducted by the church pastor, Rev. Jeff Morgan.There was a meal served in the Evergreen Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Do remember her husband and other family members in your prayers.
I am happy to report the Iola Bulldogs won their home-opener 27-6 against Normangee Sept. 1. Good going Iola.
Orphans Friend Masonic Lodge No. 17 had a good number of members present at their monthly meeting. The meal served was enjoyed by all. The lodge meeting followed. District 29B Deputy Grand Master William Andrew Smith of the Grand Lodge of Texas was present. He brought greetings from the Grand Master of Texas, G. Clay Smith. It was also announced that John LeFlore passed away. He was a longtime lodge member and will certainly be missed.
Bedias Masonic Lodge held their monthly meeting at their lodge hall with a good number of members and visitors attending. The covered dish meal was enjoyed. One of the lodge members, Jerry L. Bland, received his 50-year pin. He received a golden lapel pin and a framed certificate. Many of his family members and friends were present to wish him well. Other items of business were also handled.
Area residents were sorry to learn of the death of Jo Ann Cole who passed away Thursday,Aug. 31. Her funeral was held Sept. 9, at Days Funeral Home in Madisonville. She was buried beside her husband in the Bedias Methodist Cemetery. Do remember her family in your prayers.
Iola Food Pantry is open Sept. 16, at Iola Missionary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 9-11 a.m. Anyone needing of assistance are welcome to attend. Setup for the pantry is the day before around noon. Volunteers are welcome to assist.
