Sharing history of the VFW
White Hall Community VFD first Saturday BBQ was a success with all our loyal customers and several first-time visitors. One couple ordered and shortly afterwards, the young man came back to order another sandwich.Another customer asked how to help, and we discussed her joining. We were done fairly early this time and there were no buns left and only about 2-3 pounds of meat.
It was a busy day, and we are thankful for that. VFD members thank all the customers for being patient and understanding. We hope to see everyone again Oct. 7.
Did you know at the age of 60, Julian Dickerson was named the first commander of Post 4006? He served this position 1945-1946. Dickerson was born Jan. 22, 1884 in Florida. He lived in Austin prior to moving to Navasota in 1940. He and his wife Edith lived on Holland Street. According to the records I located, he and Edith had four children.
Julian Dickerson passed away Nov. 15, 1962 at the age of 77. Records indicate he rests at Forest Park East Cemetery, in Webster, in the Chapel View Mausoleum.
The reasoning for naming the Post Grimes County is not in writing that I can find. I did locate a member, Leland Ferguson, who held numerous positions in our Post. He informed me about the name. At that time when the Post was chartered, the intention was to have a post in each county in the state. This information led me to understand why the Post in Navasota was named Grimes County. He and I discussed that as years went by, more posts were organized in some of the larger counties; therefore, names were chosen to honor a veteran, individual or a town.
OnApril 6, 1846, the first state legislature accepted the petition of local residents and established Grimes County, named in honor of Jesse Grimes, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a Texas Revolution veteran who was then representing the area in the state senate.
