Read moreEach year our community spends time and effort planning Mainstreet Halloween, and each year the event gets bigger and better. This year was no exception with the presence of a petting zoo, book garden, the biggest haunted house yet, bouncy slide and multiple games- all which trick-o-treaters played for free earning candy, sweets, and prizes. Booths from both the Civic Club, Richards VFD, local churches, and others ensured every child enjoyed their visit. Kara Hughes, librarian for Richards ISD spent time with multiple children helping each pick out books, discussing their favorite authors and encouraging them to read daily. Barbeque by Michael Bauer was also available with a portion of the proceeds from the sales going towards the Richards Civic Club.

They are also making care packages for the homeless. In addition, they have several drives including a pajama drive, sock drive and Toys for Tots drive. Read moreThe monthly meeting of the Iola-North Zulch Order of the Eastern Star was held Monday, Oct. 25, in North Zulch at the Pyramid Masonic Lodge with good number of members and visitors (approximately 25) present. The covered dish meal was enjoyed by all. Deputy Grand Matron, Dianne Ryder, attended the meeting. She gave the Grand Worthy Matron’s message for the year. There was a good deal of business taken care of as well.

Read moreAnderson’s Trunk or Treat was a huge success again. Thank goodness we are able to let our children – young and old – experience a safe and fun Halloween. When I was growing up we didn’t have anything like that. After my dad, Frank Hoffart, closed our grocery store in Dobbin on Halloween night, he would load all us and our friends in the back of his old Ford truck. We would all cram in the bed of the truck – no seat belts back in those days – and he would drive us all over the area. He would come to a house or a group of houses and we would all jump out and go door to door then jump back in. Ahhh, those were the days! Such sweet and fun memories.

It appears the new rules do allow for visitors under the age of 18 as long as they are accompanied by an adult or guardian. One of the Post members called and asked that I include this information in my news.
