The 30th annual Bruce Family Reunion was held at Keith Community Center Sunday, Nov. 5, with around 35 family members and visitors present. The covered dish meal was enjoyed by all. There was a successful auction featuring a variety of items. The reunion featured the Melvin and Edna Bruce family. Their only living daughter, Cora Bruce Lucas, was present along with several of her children and their children. The children now deceased are George Bruce, Ecelyn Bruce Roberts, Lena Bruce Jarvis and Ruth Bruce Whitmire. Everyone had a good time and plan to meet again next year.

Last week I had my own rules given to me by a 2-year-old, “no flip flops outside.” Okay, gotcha Mr. Kohen. It is interesting to me that a 2-year-old has such a memory. I want to wish a belated happy birthday to my friend and mentor, Beth McGinty. I failed to have her in my birthday list last week for Nov. 11. I hope your day was a very good one.

Vitex agnus-castus, vitex, is native to Asia and the Mediterranean region. Now common in Grimes County landscapes, it’s believed that vitex came to North America in the 17th century. It is easily recognizable because of its spikes of showy, purple flowers. Bees, butterflies and other insects enjoy the nectar which produces excellent honey. It is usually from 3 to 10 feet tall and may be as wide with twisty multiple trunks. Leaves are olive green and palmately compound. Flowers and leaves are aromatic. Dark brown fruit is a drupe, berry-like. Beautiful and hardy, vitex is prized as a long-lived cut flower. The Texas Department of Transportation, txdot.gov, has recommended it for plantings in the median of some state highways.

Once upon a time I was in the construction business. Sort of, anyway. This would have been about 20 years ago, and I was part of a mission team with my church. Prior to this endeavor, my construction skills included operating a hammer, a saw, and sometimes a drill. “No experience needed”, they said. “We’ll teach you everything you need to know”, they said. Despite my lack of know-how, I reluctantly agreed to join the team for the building project in Mexico. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to help out, I was just concerned about being a liability instead of an asset. That all changed once we got on site.

Keith Civic Club held their monthly meeting Oct. 26, at Keith Community Center with a small number in attendance. A report was given about the recent garage sale. A good amount of money was raised. This will help with various projects. There was another sale Oct. 28, and more items were sold, and more money raised.
