Awaiting details for White Hall Anniversary
A dead computer and dead modem prevented me from having news last week.
My sister, Judy, was in the pioneer Diamonettes group so she came to celebrate with her former dancers. It was sad that only one other member was present for the celebration. No, she did not dance. I was hoping she would.
Somerville’s Homecoming is still in the air since the visiting team, Runge High School, has forfeited all their games due to a lack of players, I presume. I hope that they can find a team to play.
The First Responders Breakfast was Saturday, Sept. 9. A couple of the officers mentioned all law enforcement has minimal officers scheduled for weekends. I guess many of them were sharing a weekend with their families.
The Courtney/White Hall 4-H group is having their yearly pecan and nut sales. You can contact any member of the group to order your pecans for your Christmas baking. The leaders are Kaitlin Mikulin, 936-8705242 and Linda Robbins, 979219-0579. They are meeting at 6 p.m. the second Sunday of the month at the Salem Lutheran Church Educational Building.
The 150th anniversary in White Hall is for the community not for Salem Lutheran Church. As soon as I get more information from the planning committee, I will let you know. The date has been moved to Nov. 18. If you would like to help the committee, please let me know and I will share your information.
White Hall CommunityVFD met for their monthly meeting Monday, Sept. 11. There were 13 members, one prospective member and one little guest. A couple of our firefighters walked the stairs on the TAMU campus in memory of 9/11. I want to encourage members of the community to visit our monthly meetings to know what is happening and our needs to protect the community.
It was an honor to attend the burial of Airman Elton Gomillion of Iola. Gomillion was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire and crashed during Operation TIDAL WAVE onAug. 1, 1943. The remains that could not be identified were buried as Unknowns in the Hero Section of the Civilian and Military Cemetery of Bolovan, Ploiesti, Prahova, Romania. Eighty years later, Gomillion was identified and returned to his home in Iola. Iola ISD brought two busses with students. The military service was amazing. Law enforcement, county employees, veterans from both the American Legion, Grimes County VFW and other Post officers were present. The weather was not great but the attendance sure was.
