Is it really September? Wow, at my age, I sure wish time would slow down. However, there are many other reasons to smile - the beautiful mornings, the sunset and the rain we have received. Saturday, the District 17 of the VFW had their quarterly meeting and this one included training. I was so excited when Post 4006 was called because I could say president and seven, meaning eight were present.

The Grimes County Fair has come and gone and now these fair participants can enjoy the rest of the summer which goes by so fast. But these “dog days of summer” with the temperatures in the 100s seem to linger slowly. I remember as a kid the hottest days of summer were June and July but as a rule, the hottest days tend to come in August and September. As for winter, the coldest days used to be in November and December but seems to come in January and February these years. I know it has something to do with our atmosphere but since science was not my favorite subject in school I didn’t catch onto the reasoning behind it all!

Iola Food Pantry will be open Saturday, June 18, at Iola Missionary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Anyone in need of a helping hand are invited to come out and receive assistance. You never know what all will be available. Also, the day before, around noon, the pantry will be open to prepare for distribution. Come out and assist either or both days. The White Hall Community VFD fundraiser last Saturday was a bit slow. I’m not sure where the customers were but I would like to thank all the loyal people who always come to support our fundraiser.
