The annual meeting of Martins Prairie Church Cemetery Association was held at Martins Prairie Church Sunday, Sept. 4, with a good number in attendance. The meeting was called to order by president Dexter Lavender. The pianist for the day was Sharon Lavender. There were several congregational songs. Special music was provided by John Briscoe.

“Carnival Sunday” will be held at Zion Lutheran Church Sunday, Sept. 18 on the church grounds, 455 FM 149 in Anderson. The day will start out with Sunday school from 9-10 a.m. followed by the worship service from 10-11 a.m. The carnival will begin at 11:30 a.m. Join this parish for brisket plates and carnival games. A free will offering will be taken up for repairs on the parsonage roof.

Is it really September? Wow, at my age, I sure wish time would slow down. However, there are many other reasons to smile - the beautiful mornings, the sunset and the rain we have received. Saturday, the District 17 of the VFW had their quarterly meeting and this one included training. I was so excited when Post 4006 was called because I could say president and seven, meaning eight were present.

Keith Civic Club held their monthly meeting Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Keith Community Center with a small number in attendance. The covered dish meal was enjoyed by all. During the business meeting a variety of ideas were discussed on ways to raise money for the new roof for the building. Some will take place soon.

Once there was a sign at Navasota along Highway 6 that stated, “Navasota, The Land Flowing with Milk and Honey!” It stopped travelers to take photos. But according to a family history in the Grimes County Heritage and Society book, it is the story of a 16-year old girl who came to Grimes County with her parents, Henry Washington and Emma Etta (Drew) Somerford.

The Texas Department of Transportation has adopted a 10-year statewide roadway construction plan with a record $85 billion price tag, officials announced last week. The Unified Transportation Plan authorizes the distribution of construction money that is expected to be available during the next decade. Within that framework, TxDOT works with elected officials and local planning organizations, as well as the public, to pick and fund the state’s highest priority transportation projects.
