The annual meeting of Martins Prairie Church Cemetery Association was held at Martins Prairie Church Sunday, Sept. 4, with a good number in attendance. The meeting was called to order by president Dexter Lavender. The pianist for the day was Sharon Lavender. There were several congregational songs. Special music was provided by John Briscoe. There was also a history of the Davis Family presented by descendent, Richard Timm.
The Davis Family came to Texas in the 1840’s. Their ancestor, Matthew Caldwell, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. His daughter Martha married a Davis in Grimes County. It really was a good program. The names of those that died since last year’s meeting were announced including: Cee Cee Candler, Calvin Messer, Ross Allen Jarvis, Bernard Chesnutt, Doris Mae Bryant Shifflett, Lois Coneley and Clyde Thomas. May their memories be forever blessed. Following the service, lunch was served in the church fellowship hall. As usual, the meal was wonderful. If you wish to donate to the cemetery, send to Darlene Lavender, 14389 FM 244, Iola. TX 77861. A tombstone was recently placed in Martins Prairie Cemetery for Doris Mae Bryant Shifflett. Dates are Dec. 31, 1935 – March 29, 2022. Her ashes were buried in the graves of her parents, Oscar J. and Lillie M. Bryant. May her memory be forever blessed. Pyramid Masonic Lodge No 593 will meet in North Zulch Tuesday, Sept. 21. The meeting will begin with a meal at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lodge meeting. All Masons are invited to attend. The Iola Food Pantry will distribute food Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Iola Missionary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 9-11 a.m. All that need a helping hand are invited to attend. Also, the day before at noon, volunteers are requested to help set up for the distribution. All assistance is certainly appreciated. Evergreen Baptist Church will assist with distribution.
