At Courtney, in the year 1913, when the two-story brick school was completed, and classes opened that fall, the town was a bustling, hustling town. The railroad was easy access; cotton was still king in the Brazos River bottom; there were mercantile stores, blacksmith shops, a gristmill, a sawmill, the saloon, along with churches and a post office. The main highway to Navasota was the King’s Trail, now named County Road 326.

It appears that most of the people who lost their homes have managed to rebuild and move on. Read moreIt is nice to feel like we are finally working toward getting back to some type of normal life. Although it’s not what we are used to, it’s still better than what it was a month ago. On Monday, May 25, Don’s mom, JoAnn Sowell turned 84. Being as she is a resident of Navasota Nursing and Rehab and all nursing homes are still on “lock down,” we have not been able to visit her since mid-March. Employee Mary Mable arranged a window visit for us with her that day. So, Don and I and Joe and Denise Shead got to see her precious smiling face for the first time in months, and she was just as beautiful as always. Our family would like to express our appreciation and a big thank you to Mary Mable for fixing her hair and painting her nails that morning. She looked as if she felt like a queen. JoAnn has always been a big “hugger” so that was the hardest part not being able to give or get a hug.

Read moreTo wear a mask or not, that is the question? There is much controversy today about masks. In my opinion, for what it’s worth, and this is strictly just my opinion, I believe it’s up to the person wearing the mask. I have seen people become angry about either way. I try to wear a mask most of the time when I am out and about. I would not want to make anyone sick. I did attend church for the first time Sunday in quite a while and forgot my mask. I just tried to keep my distance. I understand to wear the mask does not protect me but protects everyone else.
