What a weekend! Saturday started with giving Buddy Poppies to people as a reminder of all our fallen veterans. Many people donated to the cause and Veterans of Foreign War Post 4006 and Auxiliary really appreciate the help for veterans’ projects. If you’re not aware, disabled veterans are the ones who make the Buddy Poppies.

Tractor Supply and Brookshire Brothers have always been very supportive of our efforts and this year children of one of our veterans passed out poppies at Wal Mart.

Saturday night was back to the Whiskey Tango bar. I think some of my grandchildren are getting a little concerned about their Gingi. There was no winner in the weekly raffle benefiting veterans and the pot is now very close to $15,000. There are 26 cards remaining in the deck. Every Saturday we will continue the game until someone wins. After that, I guess we will start another game. Come join us for the fun.

Sunday was church and then family visited for a belated Mother’s Day and birthday celebration for both Kacie and Butch, my son-in-law. Everyone was here. Joni did most of the cooking and I got the James Avery charm that I really wanted. We were looking through some genealogy for Butch Fields and his family and I really got tickled at Kaleigh. She was excited that many of the family were from Iola.

Later, I attended the Memorial Day ceremony at the VFW Post. Rev. Henry Sanders was the guest speaker and his service was very powerful and somewhat chilling, if you know what I mean. I am relating to when an idea or thought gives you goosebumps. With all the turmoil in our country, please teach the meaning of Memorial Day to your children and grandchildren. As Rev. Sanders said, a memorial is established in memory of someone. Therefore, Memorial Day is to remember our fallen veterans who gave their lives for our freedoms, not just one freedom.

It was good to see Cindy and Rick Large in attendance, as well, as the others who took time out of their day to honor our veterans.

For those of you who know my Rosenberg family, Gerry Loesch Runge Janacek passed away Wednesday. This has really been tough on her grandchildren. Please keep this family in your prayers as they have suffered many losses in a year’s time.

I am saddened to say that Mrs. Betty Nigliazzo passed away this past week also. A memorial service is planned for June 11, 1:30 p.m. at the Hillier Funeral Home in College Station. Many years ago, the Nigliazzo couple, Joe and Betty, moved to Whitehall from Jersey Village. They were blessed with a set of twin boys, Mike and Zack. I had the experience of trying to tell those two boys apart and also had Zack as a student worker at Texas A&M University. I am sending condolences to the Nigliazzo family from Whitehall.

Reminder, the WHCVFD monthly business has been rescheduled for Monday, June 10.

On June 14, Flag Day, old worn and torn flags will be retired beginning at 6:30 p.m. Following this retirement, the Koka Kola Cowboys will play at the VFW Post 4006. Admission is $5.00 per person. Come and join the fun.

Our sick and homebound friends include Sue Kolojaco, Lawrence Lieder, Dorothy Mahaffey, Mary Bauer, Lillian Shimshack, Albin Finke, Charles Waters, Leonard Serres, Lois Bell, John Lawrence, Allen Fields, Jerri Ripper, Al Ripper, Susie Rimes, Rickey Bin-ford, Charles Wellman, Larry Farmer and Alexander Hanna, grandson of Curtis and Darla Kolojaco. Please add them to your prayer list.
