Randle, Dickson shine in opener
Derrion Randle had a career performance during the Lamar University football team’s win in its season opener.
The senior running back finished the game with five carries for a career-high 79 yards in the 65-16 win over Bethel (Tenn.) University. The Navasota High School graduate led players from both teams in rushing yardage.
Randle was most productive during the third quarter. On the first possession, he raced 46 yards on a firstand-10 play, the longest run of his career. He said a defensive back tackled him after the burst down the sideline.
“That play is one of our base plays,” he said. “It was outside around the corner. I just followed my blocking.”
He scored from 6 yards out after taking the handoff on the next play. “It was up the middle,” he said. “I muscled through to the end zone.”
His performance was a relief to him because he fumbled the ball away on a 9-yard rush during the second quarter. He said a linebacker “hit the ball on the right spot.”
During the summer Randle stayed on campus and said he trained twice as hard because he had winter surgery for an injury. He was able to participate in spring camp, however, and rushed three times for 71 yards, with two touchdowns, in the March scrimmage.

Texas Southern University wide receiver Tren’Davian Dickson had eight receptions for 76 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown, against Prairie View A & M. The former Rattler added a 17-yard kickoff return.
Also, from the Rattlers, running back Keyondrick Philio from University of the Incarnate Word rushed twice for 7 yards against University of Texas at San Antonio.
Men’s rodeo
Previously at Anderson-Shiro, Paden Hurst placed sixth in bareback riding at the Elk City Rodeo of Champions and earned $452. He was eighth in bareback riding at the Pioneer City Rodeo and earned $206.
Women’s cross country
Anderson-Shiro graduate Kimberly Keally finished the CROOSader Dual Meet 2-mile run in 16th place. She is a University of Dallas junior.
