Lady Rattlers win home tourney

It has been a perfect start for the Navasota Lady Rattlers, achieving a personal goal of winning the Lady Rattler Classic, going a perfect 6-0 in tournament play.

The tournament win propels the Ladies in blue to a 9-0 start to the season. Texas Girls Coaches Association Rankings have Navasota ranked number one in Texas in class 4A. It was a dominant performance by the host, Lady Rattlers, who only lost one set throughout the tournament. “I knew coming in we would definitely have our hands full,” explained Navasota Head Coach Susan Foy. “Franklin has a good program and they beat us pretty bad last year, Tomball’s JV is a strong program, so I knew they would be tough. I really wanted us to develop some consistency, that was one of the goals.”

Foy said the players, that include eight seniors, set their own team goals and winning their home tournament was one of those goals. In pool play, Navasota defeated Cleveland 2-0 (25-8, 25-10), Snook (25-11, 25-12) and Trinity (25-9, 25-9).

During bracket play, the Lady Rattlers picked up wins over Richards (25-11, 25-18), Franklin (25-17, 12-25, 15-12) and Tomball JV (25-23, 25-22). Tomball JV finished in second place and Franklin placed third.

In the Silver Bracket, New Caney was crowned champions, Bryan JV second and Cleveland earned third place.

In the JV tournament, The Lady Rattler JV team finished in fourth place going 4-2 for the tournament. They picked up pool game wins over Richards (25-23, 25-5), Cleveland (25-11, 25-13) and Groveton (25--

In bracket play, Navasota beat Giddings (25-20, 27-5) then dropped games to Brenham (25-21, 25-13) and Livingston (22-25, 24-26, 15-7).

The Lady Rattlers played at Waller Tuesday, Aug. 17 (results were not available at press time). The Varsity team will compete at the Krum tournament Aug. 18-20. Navasota will host the Lady Rattler Freshman Classic Saturday, Aug. 20.
