Former Owls running, fi shing

Fabiola Hernandez knew what to expect this cross country season. The Anderson-Shiro High School graduate was third among Jacksonville College’s entries in the Sept. 4 opener. She placed 19th among 39 to finish the 5K, as the team was third of four in the field.

“It was actually a good start,” the second-year runner said. “I pushed out of my comfort zone. I’m working on my speed more.”

Her time of 22 minutes, 47.9 seconds was better than her time in her 5K debut last year.

“I tried to not get in a crowd of people,” she said. “If I got in a crowd, find my way out.”

She ran with two teammates for some of the race before one moved ahead and finished first for the team. Hernandez finished 3.5 seconds behind the other teammate.

The course had one notable incline. “It was a really steep hill,” she said. “My legs were killing me afterwards.”

During the summer Her nandez averaged 12 miles a week and did sprints to help boost her speed.

She expects to compete in the 5K during the spring track and field season, just as she did last year.

Bass fishing

Also from Anderson-Shiro, Colton Spinks teamed with Logan Stewart to place 12th among 13 teams in the Texas BASS Nation College National Championship qualifier. The two, who have been competing for Sam Houston State Univer sity, had five keepers during the July two-day event.

Football

Navasota High product Joel Castaneda is a freshman linebacker for Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Alfredo Villasenor is no longer competing for Kansas Wesleyan University. The former Rattler was listed as a freshman offensive lineman on last year’s roster.
