Curtain call for RISD actors

Drama, while always present in high schools, is being put to good use at Richards ISD. The High School theater team will perform “The Tell-Tale Heart” which will also serve as their one and only fundraiser. The one act play team is led by Joelle Dulaney, a 17-year veteran staff member of RISD.
Dulaney teaches Art, CTE, One Act play and volunteers where needed at RISD. She has taught One Act play for the last 5 years and enjoys the work of taking a student too shy to work on stage, building their confidence and skills to be a lead actor. “We want to teach these kids skills, the main thing is seeing them advance in competition, earn recognition and have more students involved in our group,” explained Dulaney. Currently the group boasts nine total members from 8th grade to seniors. Dulaney has already began recruiting for next year. “We don’t typically have tryouts, because we don’t want to discourage anyone,” she said. “If they are unsure of being on stage, we can always use the student for media and stage crew.”
This year for their oneact play event on Thursday, they hope to raise $500 or more to help purchase much needed supplies and additional items that are not typically supplied by the district. The event will be held at the RISD auditorium, Thursday April 28 at 6 p.m., tickets are $5 each and a dessert auction will be available to help raise additional funds for the one act play team.
Spring basketball is kicking off in Richards with boys’ basketball starting the schedule off this week. They played April 25, and have games scheduled May 2, May 9 and May 16. The Girls will begin their Spring League season April 28, with other games scheduled May 5, May 12, and May 19. Coach Tennison, one of the newer staff members for RISD, has worked hard to develop the spring league program, a first in several years for RISD athletes. Tennison has spent the last several months developing stronger athletes. The goal of the lead coach is to in still good values and work towards stronger seasons beginning next year. The spring programs are the beginning works of this labor - with a focus on skill development and teamwork.
RISD will also host a Spring Blood drive Friday, April 29, from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the RISD parking lot. The goal is 24 donors.
Spring Heavy Trash Event is happening Saturday, April 30, at Longstreet Community Center, 20240 Bays Chapel Rd. in Richards. The event is geared towards residential cleanup and provides both the community and local government responsible ways to maintain clean areas, and proper waste disposal. Items accepted include: latex and oil-based paints, non-household trash items.
