A good sum of money was raised for Iola Volunteer Fire Department Friday and Saturday, March 11-12 during their annual fundraiser. On Friday crawfish was sold and Saturday they sold catfish with all the trimmings. There was also a live auction and barbecue cookoff. Thanks to all that helped make the event a success.

Plantersville Stoneham Volunteer Fire Department is looking for a few good women and men to be firefighters and first responders. They meet and offer trainings every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the station. Everyone is invited to attend. Applications are available.

Recently, a Sandbar column told of the Sam Houston son, William “Willi” Rogers Houston, and that he was named after a “favorite cousin of his mother.” That “favorite cousin” was Colonel William P. Rogers, a well-known Texas lawyer, soldier, law professor at Baylor University and Sam’s personal attorney.
