Eddings scores eight

Jaggar Vaughn is doing his best to earn playing time.

The Iola High School graduate said he is among six catchers on the LeTourneau University baseball roster. A senior is the starter, he said, with the rest vying for their place on the depth chart.

The freshman entered the program after a stellar high school season. He was named to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 2A all-state second team and Texas Sports Writers Association Class 2A all-state third team. He was the District 26-2A defensive most valuable player.

During the summer Vaughn played for a Dynasty team in Kingwood. He said he played about 20 games and mostly caught, though he also played the corner infield positions.

“Just to stay in shape and to get some reps,” said Vaughn, who had three hits, including two doubles, and three runs batted in during a July win over the Fort Worth Cats.

Since arriving at LeTourneau, he has made minor adjustments to his hitting stance.

“When I was swinging, my front shoulder was flying open too early,” he said, noting that meant he wasn’t looking at the pitch heading his way and made it more difficult to make contact.

He has worked on staying through the ball to be more consistent in making solid contact.

During the fall, the team scrimmaged twice against Cedar Valley College, he said. He was a designated hitter in the second game, which he said featured the team’s backups and younger players.

The founder of Iola’s bass fishing team, Vaughn said he brought two poles with him to college. But he had been able to fish just once as of early November.

Women’s basketball

Keaundra Eddings had eight points for Blinn College against Palo Alto College. The Navasota High alumna had four rebounds and four steals.

Freshman D’Asia White of McMurry University had four assists and three points in a start against Texas Lutheran. The Anderson-Shiro product added three rebounds.
