Baker named to preseason watch list

In a game featuring a local on each team, quarterback Shelton Eppler led Northwestern State University of Louisiana to its first victory.

Playing at University of the Incarnate Word, the Navasota High School graduate threw a 1-yard touchdown pass in overtime to give the Demons a 44-41 victory, its first in eight games.

The senior completed 30 of 40 pass attempts for 259 yards. He threw a 19-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Eppler tossed two interceptions and was sacked twice.

Former Rattler Keyondrick Philio rushed seven times for 25 yards for Incarnate Word. The junior running back scored on a 3-yard carry in the second quarter.

More football

Defensive lineman Jordan Wells made five tackles for Tarleton State University against Texas A & M University-Kingsville. The past Rattler added a 6-yard sack.

Texas A & M tight end Ryan Renick had an 11-yard kickoff return against Mississippi State. He played for Iola High.

Baseball

Out of Anderson-Shiro High, Garrett Harris pitched the past season for Trois-Rivieres of the independent Canadian American Association, which has merged with the Frontier League.

Men’s basketball

Louisiana College junior Kae’ron Baker has been named to the American Southwest Conference East Division preseason watch list. Baker, who played for the Rattlers, was the East Division’s newcomer of the year for his play a season ago.

Jabril Hunter of Wilberforce University had 15 points against Ottawa. The Navasota graduate had seven rebounds, which shared the game high for the team, and one assist entering the game as a reserve.

Women’s basketball

Previously with the Owls, D’Asia White is a freshman guard for McMurry University.
