JoAnn Costa Smith (Urbanosky), 81, of Navasota and Plantersville, died Saturday morning, September 28, 2019, at CHI St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

A gathering of family and friends took place Tuesday, October 1, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 9677 Hwy 6, in Navasota. A parish rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass celebrating her life was held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2019, at Christ Our Light Catholic Church with Rev. Elias Lopez as the celebrant. The rite of committal followed in Oakland Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Duane Ermis, Jerome Urbanosky, Jr., Cole Harrington, Zach Kinnison, Landon Stem and Jordan Green.

JoAnn was born December 19, 1937 in Houston to Joseph A. and Anna Lois Grice Costa. She grew up in Houston and later moved to Navasota where she graduated from Navasota High School in 1956. JoAnn married Alton P. Smith on March 3, 1957. She worked for a number of years for Mid-South Electric in Navasota. Later she ventured out and opened The Gift Shop. After retiring from the Gift Shop, she worked with her husband at Smith Brothers Implements until they retired. Alton preceded her in death in 2003.

JoAnn believed in giving back to the community she so loved and supported her and Alton over the years. She was a longtime member and past president of the Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce, an active and proud member of the Grimes County Republican Women, and a longtime supporter of the Grimes County Fair Association. JoAnn was an active member of Christ Our Light Catholic Church where she had served as president of the Altar Society and served as an extraordinary minister and lector.

JoAnn loved to socialize and had a special love for dancing which lead her to meeting Harold Urbanosky. They married on August 19, 2006 and enjoyed traveling and dancing. They were a well-known couple at Bernhardt Winery and could be seen every Sunday evening at their concerts. Harold preceded her in death July 12, 2019.

JoAnn is preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents, a son, Rex Smith and step son, Bruce Urbanosky, and sister Eilleen Hall.

Survivors include her son Rob Smith of Las Vegas, NV; Harold’s sons, H. Jerome Urbanosky, Jr. and wife Jane of Plantersville and Mark Urbanosky and wife Terry of Ardmore, OK; sister-in-law, Phyllis Vaughn of Blossom, TX; brothers-in-law, James A. and Thomas F. Urbanosky, both of Caldwell; 16 grandchildren and 16, great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a great number of friends.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family has requested a memorial in JoAnn’s name to Encompass Hospice or a favorite charity.
