Richards News

As the media keeps reporting on the many shootings across our nation, it makes some people very nervous. As we go about our daily lives, we can never be too careful and should always be on guard. However, concerned we may be, statistics don’t show a rise in crime. It was brought to my attention that perhaps it’s just because we hear all about these crimes making us question if the crime rate is up. I read the 2019 statistics and crime is down. We hear a lot more about crime than we use to because we have more means of publicizing with social media. There was a time when most crimes went unheard of because they weren’t largely publicized. We live in a forever changing world and I’m sad for all the people who lost loved ones. We should keep them in our prayers.

I would like to congratulate Becky Duff on her recent retirement. I want to apologize for missing her retirement party. I would’ve loved to have been there. Becky has lived in the Richards and Grimes County area for many years and has been a dear friend for a long time. She has done an awesome job working for the county and knows how important her job is. Becky is an intelligent woman and on behalf of the community I wish her the very best. The position is left in good hands with Lucy Lange Ybarra taking her place. Lucy is also from Richards and is an amazing lady. She will do a very good job for the county. We welcome Lucy.

It was a full house Sunday as I pulled up to Union Grove Baptist Church in a 15-passenger van. I had 12 of my grandchildren for the weekend and Friday night it was a slumber party. Seven of them stayed until Sunday. We all had a great time together making many beautiful memories. Clay and Shala Smith who are their parents went on a trip for their anniversary. Happy Anniversary Clay and Shala.

Union Grove was celebrating their 135th Anniversary. A large congregation turned out for the historic event. There was beautiful music by several singers and the choir. There were also recognitions of former pastors, youth directors and of course a lot of stories were shared about the history of the church. A special time of remembrance was included for those who died between 2014-2019. Those recognized were Pauline Bussell, Jasper Caldwell, Hal Pitman, Jane Pool, Lisa Simmons, Dennis Stuckey, Bonnie Watson, Bobbie Jo Wells, Houston Wheatley Jr. Juanita Williams, and Harry Wooster. Continue to keep these family and friends in your prayers. There was a lunch provided afterward consisting of catfish and all the trimmings.

Shiro Days returns to downtown Shiro Friday, Aug. 9 and Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. located downtown in Shiro. There will be vendors and food.

The Shiro Senior luncheon is Aug. 9, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. It is sponsored by Shiro Feed and Shiro Civic Association. Please come out and join them for lunch and stay for games and visiting.

Continue to pray for Tere Phelps, Lynda Wells, and all the people in the recent shootings, and continue to pray for our children, and staff as they prepare to start back to school!
