NHS Choir earns Sweepstakes
Spring has been a joyful melody of accomplishment for the Navasota High School Choir who were recognized as a Sweepstakes Choir at the UIL Region XXVII Concert & Sight-Reading Evaluation. The choir also went on a Spring Tour.
Both NHS choral ensembles earned Division 1’s for their stage performance and Division 1’s for their sight-reading at the Region XXVII Evaluation. This is the first time NHS Tenor-Bass Choir received a Sweepstakes. It is also the first time all choirs and all performing ensembles from band and choir earned Sweepstakes.
This is only the second time in NHS history that a treble choir has received sweepstakes at UIL. The first was in 2018 under former director, Jessica Steels.
Spring Tour Navasota had 19 choir members attend the NHS Spring Tour April 20-23. On day one the choir visited Baylor University in Waco where they had the opportunity to work with Dr. Holmes and witness Dr. Bradley work with the Baylor Men’s Choir. Before departing, students visited NHS Alum, Nick Hernandez, who is a member of Baylor Choir.
The day continued with the choir traveling to San Antonio to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio Spring Choir Concert. Students returned to UTSA the following morning for a clinic with Dr. Boyd. Following the clinic, students visited the Alamo and attended the WorldStrides San Antonio Music Festival where they sang for three judges and received a clinic with Professor William Gokelman from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. The Navasota High School Mixed Choir received the Silver Award “These students continue to inspire me with their dedication to the arts and the talent they bring to class and the stage each and every week,” explained NHS Choir Director Jason Mincy.
Day three of the tour choir students visited the San Antonio Zoo, spent time by the pool and attended an evening filled with excitement that included a barbeque buffet, awards ceremony, rodeo and dancing.
“This was an action- packed weekend full of learning and growth on the part of the students. I can’t express enough how much they have improved this year and I can’t wait to see what they can do in the future,” said Mincy.
