IOLA — Last Friday night the Iola Bulldogs (3-6) faced off against the Bremond Tigers finishing their third-district game with a 40-6 loss.
The Bulldogs started the game strong holding the Tigers scoreless until just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter when Bremond scored their first touchdown on a 34-yard pass. The extra point kick failed.
The Iola Bulldogs intensified their level of play in the second quarter with a touchdown from senior running back, Adam Crenshaw, who ran the ball 66 yards, tying the score 6-6. Crenshaw finished the game with 91 rushing yards and 10 receiving yards. The extra point was unsuccessful.
Iola’s defense was unable to stop the Tigers offensive aggression and Bremond matched Crenshaw’s score with a 5-yard touchdown and 14-yard touchdown along with two successful extra points. The first half ended 20-6, with Tigers in the lead.
“In the first half we played a good game,” Crenshaw recalled, “we got all of our blocks, but in the second half we ran out of gas, we got tired, and they just capitalized on that.”
The Tigers came out hot in the second half, scoring four consecutive touchdowns, three of which were over 50-yard scores and one of which was a 20-yard interception return. Only three of the four kick attempts were successful. The score was 47-6 Tigers in the lead to end the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs defense finally mustered up enough gumption to put an end to the Tigers offensive assault but were unable to compensate on their own side of the board.
The final score was 47-6 leaving the Iola Bulldogs 0-4 in district.
After the game, Iola head coach Kerry Bamburg said, “just like we told them, we have to play two halves. We can’t play good one-half and then come out flat the second. We have to make plays both halves. We didn’t do that tonight, but hopefully next week we will.”
Iola hosts the Bartlett Bulldogs at 7:30p.m., Friday, Nov. 8 for their final district game. Bremond hosts the Louise Hornets for a neutral nonconference game at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14.
