Area athletes shine on diamond

Garrett Harris has been a top pitcher in the independent Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball.

The Anderson-Shiro High School graduate entered June 19 with 38 innings pitched, the most for Trois-Riviéres. The right-hander led the squad with four wins, which tied for the league lead, and had not lost in eight appearances.

He led the league with 54 strikeouts, while issuing just 10 bases on balls, and had a 2.84 earned run average.

Harris allowed four hits and one earned run in nine innings of a June 14 no decision, when he matched his season high of 11 strikeouts. The team won in extra innings.

More baseball

Navasota High product Dalton Acosta had a 0-1 record and 3.00 ERA in six games for the Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox of the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League. The right-hander, who pitches for University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, started once and allowed one hit in a scoreless four innings of a no decision.

Pitcher Josh Mancuso had a 1-2 record and 7.94 ERA in four starts for the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs of the summer Expedition League. The Anderson-Shiro alumnus plays for Paris Junior College.

Brookhaven College pitcher Trent Clark finished the season with a 2-0 record and 3.96 ERA in 19 relief appearances. The past Rattler shared the team lead with three saves.

Football

Davon Jernigan became a free agent in early June. The Saskatchewan Roughriders released the Navasota graduate June 2. The Canadian Football League team had added the former Lamar University defensive back to its roster May

The Montreal Alouettes of the CFL removed offensive lineman Jarvis Harrison from the roster June 9, so the Navasota product became a free agent.
