JOHNNIE LEE MCDOUGALD 1933 – 2023

Johnnie Lee McDougald, age 89 went home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 6, 2023 at his home in Huntsville, Texas after a long and wonderful life. Johnnie was born on September 13, 1933 in a cotton field to Mitchell Vernon McDougald and Winnie Harkins McDougald in Iola, Texas.

Johnnie grew up in Bryan, Texas. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin high school and went on to attend college classes and played football for Allen Academy Jr. College in Bryan, Texas.

Following his college career at Allen Academy, Johnnie married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Mae Hayes and moved to Navasota, Texas, where they raised four beautiful children.

Johnnie had an abundant life full of friends from all walks of life. He loved to raise animals so most of the time, animals brought new relationships and friendships into his life. His love for animals and hunting brought many opportunities for adventure as well. Johnnie’s longtime friend, hunting buddy and world-famous jazz and blues singer Mance Lipscomb brought true testament to that in his autobiography and his songs about Johnnie and his hunting and racing dogs.

Life’s journey later planted them in Huntsville, Texas, where Johnnie worked as a welding teacher for Windham School District and Lee College. He received his teaching certificate from Texas A&M University.

In 1987 the family was greatly blessed with another daughter, who he loved and cherished. Johnnie retired from Windham School District in the late 90s ready to be home with his family and his game chickens.

Johnnie is preceded in death by his late wife, Shirley Mae Hayes McDougald; daughter, Peggy Lea McDougald Raley; father, Mitchel Vernon McDougald; mother, Winnie Harkins McDougald Gaudet; and brother, Joe Francis McDougald.

Johnnie is survived in death by his children, Kathy Lee Hanson and husband, Mark of Bastrop; Gay Lynn Perry and husband Jud of Singleton; Tra Dee Mc-Dougald of Huntsville; Brianna McDougald Ford and husband Richard of Royse City; close companion Diane Stazo McDougald of Houston, and son Christopher Walker and wife Brittany; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Wayne Hutchins of Humble, Texas; Scott Orr and wife Jackie and children MacKenzie and Chelsea Orr of Humble; Josh Lee and wife Shannon and children Hannah and Maci Lee of College Station; Jason Kelley and wife Lamina and children Graci, Landree, and Emma, Kelley of Huntsville; Jamie Skaggs and husband Nathan and children Rayburn Smith and wife, Cheyenne, Katy Hart and husband, Clinton, Hailey Mae Skaggs and Goose Skaggs of Huntsville; Brian McDougald and wife Brittany and children Zoe , Lauren and Savannah McDougald of Trinity; Trent McDougald and mother Darlene Cole of New Waverly; Colton Mc-Dougald of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Eleanor Quinn McDougald Ford of Royse City; great-great grandchildren, Charolette Smith from Rayburn; and Cheyenne Smith and Clinton Brady Hart II from Clinton and Katy Hart who will join our family by birth in September 2023.

All are invited to be with the family at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas for a visitation on Friday, April 14, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 15, for an additional visitation. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Graveside services will be held in Navasota, Texas at Oakland Cemetery at 3 p.m.

Pallbearers are Wayne Hutchins, Jason Kelley, Scott Orr, Brian McDougald, Josh Lee, TJ McDougald, and Honorary Pallbearers are Rayburn Smith and Nathan Skaggs.
