EARL AUGUST FUCHS

Born April 2, 1918, Earl August Fuchs spent 100 years creating a legacy for the family he loves. He was born in north Houston to Fred and Marie Fuchs and had one sister, Hazel Fuchs Martin. Earl worked for his father’s dairy during his early years, spending his days swimming and fishing when not doing chores. He carried on the family business after his father’s passing in 1945, when Earl was 27.

At age 18, he met Rowena Attebery at her family’s feed store. The two were married June 5, 1938, and had two children, Robert Earl Fuchs Sr. and Joyce Marilyn Fuchs Knighten. In 1957, Earl and his wife Rowena moved the family and the dairy to Planters-ville, Texas. The family operated the dairy and Earl became involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and helped to organize the first dairy calf scramble in 1946. He volunteered and chaired many committees throughout his 29 years of service to the show. Earl spent his retirement traveling the world, seeing all the U.S. states and 11 countries with the love of his life, Rowena, whom the family sadly lost in 2013 after they celebrated 75 years of marriage. Earl continued to live in his family home, cared for by his family, playing his computer poker game, puzzles and word finds and enjoying his daily desserts until his 100th birthday.

Earl was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rowena Attebery Fuchs; by his son, Robert Earl Fuchs Sr.; by his son-in-law, Woodrow “Woody” Knighten; by his great-granddaughter, Hollie Elizabeth Winn; and his grandson-in-law, Greg Gantt.

He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Joyce Knighten, and friend, Dennis Maywald; his daughter-in-law, Betty Fuchs; his seven grandchildren, Lynne Gantt, Robert Earl Fuchs Jr. and wife Ginna, Cindy Black and husband Chris, and Keith Knighten and wife Cathie; and his eight great-grandchildren, Sam Houston Winn IV, Jordan Robert Fuchs and Katherine Craig, Aaron Richard Fuchs, Ryan Allan Fuchs, Tyler Black, Brock Knighten and Brooke Knighten. Earl also had the blessing of enjoying time with a two-year-old great-great grandson, Wyatt Robert Fuchs.
