Dorothy Ruth Baxter Hughes (Dot) 1945 – 2025

Dorothy Hughes, 79, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 27, surrounded by her family at home in Navasota, Texas. She was born on September 9, 1945, in Edinburg, Texas to loving parents Barbara Warzon Baxter and Curtis Rueben Baxter. She was a lifelong resident of Grimes County since childhood.

Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and great aunt. She attended Navasota High School, Class of '64. She taught school as a substitute teacher and was an Owner of Wildflower Florist and enjoyed her time as a professional floral designer.

Every spring, our mother could be found making her garden more beautiful and her yard pristine. Dorothy loved her grandchildren, riding horses, fishing, outdoor gardening and traveling with her friends and family. She was always someone with an open ear that listened before speaking her thoughts. Dorothy’s love for Jesus gave her the peace of mind that prepared her for eternity.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andrew Jackson Hughes; and her sister, Connie St. Claire.

She is survived by her sons, Randy Hughes and wife Becky, and Mike Hughes, of Navasota; nephew, Steven Hughes of Austin; and her sister, Kathy Paull of Navasota; grandchildren, Dillon Jackson Hughes and wife Erin, Lucas Baxter Hughes and wife Taylor, Heather Hughes, Michael Hughes, Ashley Hughes and JC Hughes; great grandchildren, Ella Grace, Eli Jackson, Dean and Waylon; along with great-nieces and nephews, whom she adored.

Those who knew Dorothy will remember her for her great sense of witty humor, wisdom, and her unwavering love of her family & friends. Her legacy of hard work, kindness, and appreciation for the simple joys of life will continue in the memories of those who knew and loved her.

A memorial service honoring her life will be scheduled for a later date.
