Voters approve $6.9 million bond

The Richards community provided overwhelming support at the polls during the May 1 General Election helping to pass Proposition A, a $6,995,000 bond for Richards Independent School District.

Proposition A passed with a 77.94% approval rating (212 for, 60 against). This is the first successful bond for Richards ISD since 1965. With the growth in enrollment, comes the need for facility upgrades throughout the district which RISD plans to address with the approval of the bond.

“We are very grateful and excited that our bond passed” stated RISD Superintendent William Boyce. “We would like to thank everyone who came out and supported the Richards ISD Bond. We are all so happy that we can’t stop smiling. This isn’t just for Richards I.S.D. students, this is for the entire Richards I.S.D. community and for future generations. It feels great to be a part of this wonderful community that overwhelmingly supports the district. We will now be able to attain our much-needed utility upgrades, more classroom space and upgrades, new/renovated AG/CTE facilities, and a much-needed multipurpose gymnasium. It’s been 56 years since Richards I.S.D. passed a bond. This was much needed. We are energized and excited about our future!”

Anderson-Shiro CISD

In the race for Anderson-Shiro CISD Board of Trustee, Position No. 5, Rachel Foy defeated incumbent Lonnie Owen receiving 63.80% of the votes (104-59).

City of Plantersville

Receiving 53.91% of the total vote, Plantersville Mayor Karen Hale retains her seat defeating challenger Carolyn Kurten 69-59.

Kimberly “Kim” Allphin received the highest tally of votes earning one of the two available positions for City of Plantersville Alderman. She received 64 votes (30.92%). Otis Greenwood Jr claimed the second seat with 59 votes (28.50%).

Other candidates on the ballot included Sandra Kuta, receiving 56 votes (28.50%) and John A. Greenwood, 28 votes (13.53%).

City of Navasota

Navasota City Councilmember Grant E. Holt was elected to another term for Navasota City Council, Place No. 5. Holt received 84.58% of the vote defeating challenger Eustacio Ostigin 192-35.

City of Iola

Proposition A, the reauthorization of the local sales and use tax in Iola at the rate of one-fourth and one percent to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets passed with a vote of 11-2.

City of Bedias

Proposition A, the reauthorization of the local sales and use tax in Bedias at the rate of one-fourth and one percent to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets passed 21–1.

Future Elections

The November 2021 General Election is Tuesday, Nov. 2. The final day to register to vote to be eligible for the November election is Monday, Oct. 4. Last day to apply for a ballot by mail application is Friday, Oct. 22.
