Street brawls net arrests

Local law enforcement officers have been on high alert responding to street fights within the city and placing several subjects under arrest.

Navasota Police Chief Shawn Myatt stated that on May 27 officers responded to 520 Laredo Street for a physical fight in progress. Officers arrived on scene and witnessed multiple persons arguing and fighting.

Assistance was requested and Grimes County Sheriff’s Deputies and Department of Public Safety Troopers arrived on scene to help disperse the large crowd.

“It is believed the primary actors fled the scene as officers arrived,” said Myatt. “No injuries were reported, and no arrests were made.”

Two nights later, May 29, police were dispatched to the 700 block of Doris Street for a physical fight in progress involving two male subjects.

Upon arrival a crowd had formed of nearly 100 individuals. Officers again requested assistance and GCSO and DPS Troopers responded.

“While investigating the incident, a male subject walked behind a Navasota Officer aggressively interrupting and interfering with his duties,” explained Myatt. “This caused other subjects to begin yelling and causing disruption.”

Keyshawn Brown, 17, and Trumarlon Sweed, 17, both from Washington County, were arrested and charged with interference with public duties a class B misdemeanor. Sweed was also charged with resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.

A juvenile was also arrested for disorderly conduct.

Later that night another disturbance took place in the 700 block of Foster Street. Several persons were making violent threats to persons sitting on the property.

Navasota Police arrived on scene and the aggressors fled on foot. Tru’Shon Sweed, 17, from Navasota was arrested for assault by threat, a class C misdemeanor.

According to Myatt, additional arrest warrants for other subjects involved are being issued.
