NTA performs ‘Lend Me a Tenor’
Navasota comes alive once again, with the opening of Navasota Theater Alliance’s (NTA) newest Live Show Production of “Lend Me A Tenor,” set to open the last weekend of April at Sunny Furman Theatre
There will be nine shows over three weekends. A sensational winner of three Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards on Broadway, this screwball comedy play promises to have you laughing in the aisles. Eight accomplished actors will navigate through hilarious dialogue and sidesplitting antics.
The play is set in September 1934, as Saunders, the General Manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world famous, Tito Merilli, IL Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only, as the star of the opera. Tito arrives late, and through a hilarious series of mishaps is given a quadruple dose of tranquillizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead!
In a frantic attempt to salvage the sold-out evening performance, Saunders persuades Max to get into Merilli’s costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s IL Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but finally Merilli comes to and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now, two opera stars are running around in the same costume. An Italian wife with a notable temper is triggered; a fanatical persistent bellhop, two women running around in lingerie each thinking she is with the IL Stupendo, the Grande Dame Chairwoman of the Opera House, and a blowhard opera house general manager who often loses his temper… all follow, which will leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter!
In addition to a fabulous production of wit and comedy onstage and great eye-sites from Play Director Mark Taylor, what makes this play whole-hearted is the actors, staff and crew are all local talent from Navasota and surrounding areas. A local team of dedicated talent, who’s fervent passion it is to perform to the delight of local audiences. No actor, tech crew, or stage manager takes a salary – just a pool of polished first-class performers giving back to making this, their Navasota, alive again!
You’re invited to enjoy a worth-every-penny evening or afternoon out, to enjoy this delightful, slapstick comedy performance. Ticket prices are exceptionally modest and can be purchased online at www.navasotatheater.org where you can select your seats as well. Tickets may be picked up at will call the day/night of the performance.
