NISD honors school board
January is School Board Recognition Month, and Navasota Independent School District honored current and former NISD Board of Trustee members with a meal prior to the regular scheduled board meeting Monday, Jan. 24.
Current board members are Tim Harris, president; Trisha Harris, vice president; Amy Jarvis, secretary, Valerie Jefferson; Jennifer Ramirez; Greg Mock; and Paul Malek.
School board members also received a tour of the historic Rock Gym and Brosig Performing Arts Center that were both renovated with bond money approved by voters in 2017.
Sale of Real Property
The school board discussed the status of two NISD owned properties and approved the sale of one and donation of the other.
Property on Spur 515 in Navasota was the first property discussed. Navasota Superintendent Dr. Stu Musick stated the district has been contacted from potential buyers about the property located across from Carver School.
Musick stated the first step to selling the property either by listing it or via auction is for the board to approve a resolution for the sale.
Board member Jennifer Ramirez asked if NISD would be held to selling or have the option not to sell later. “Anything past this resolution would require board action for approval,” explained Musick. “If we put the property up for sale, approval of the sale would require board action.”
The board unanimously approved the resolution.
Skate Park
In 2009 action was taken by NISD board members to approve the donation of property on Brosig Street to the City of Navasota to have a skate park built.
Navasota Evening Lions Club representative B.J. Moody addressed NISD board members in 2021 requesting NISD donate an additional portion of land to the City of Navasota so a second phase of the skate park could be constructed.
While researching the initial donation in 2009, Musick said it was discovered that the property title was never transferred to the City of Navasota. “All of us were under the impression that the property belonged to the City of Navasota, however it was never transferred over to the city’s name. If you look at appraisal district and other records, it is still in NISD’s name,” said Musick.
Since the property was never legally transferred, Musick said the first step is to approve a resolution to take potential action to donate the property to the City of Navasota. The property would also need to be surveyed.
Ramirez asked who would pay for the survey. Musick said NISD. “So, we’re going to pay for the survey and donate the land to them [City of Navasota]?” asked Ramirez.
Musick said he is unsure of how much it will cost to get the property surveyed, but he can bring that cost back to the board. “If it is too costly to have a piece of property surveyed that we are going to donate then maybe we can split the survey cost in half with them [City of Navasota],” said Musick.
Board member Valerie Jefferson asked if NISD would be liable if injuries happened at the skate park. “Potentially we could be [liable] because it is in our name currently,” stated Musick.
The board unanimously approved the resolution to move forward with the first step of the property donation.
The next regularly scheduled board meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 21, at 6:30 p.m.
