Fanthorp Inn hosting several historic events

ANDERSON – Fanthorp Inn, a Texas Historical Commission site that served as a stagecoach stop and inn on Main Street in Anderson is hosting several upcoming events.

“Henry Fanthorp ran the very first post office in Grimes County, out of his inn, back in 1835. During this program you can discover all the etiquette that went into writing a letter and hop aboard the stagecoach to experience how the mail was transported back in Fanthorp’s heyday,” said Chandler Wahrmund, Educator at Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site. The program will include a guided tour of the inn focusing on Fanthorp’s time as postmaster. In addition to the tour, you are invited to participate in the letter writing activity where you can write, sign, fold, and seal a letter just as they did in the 1850s. On Saturday only, from 11 a.m. -3 p.m., you can hop aboard Fanthorp’s replica stagecoach and experience how letters and travelers were carried. Historic interpreters will be dressed in authentic 1850s attire to help immerse guests into the experience of frontier travel. Admission is free and open to the public. Cash donations are appreciated.

The Texas Revolution at the Fanthorp Inn

Experience what Fanthorp Inn was like during the fight for Texas Independence Apr. 9-10, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

“By the time Texas gained her independence the Fanthorp Inn had already been open for two years. During this program you can discover what Henry Fanthorp was up to during the revolution and find out which Texas heroes passed through and stopped in during the war,” said Wahrmund.

There will be a guided tour of the inn focusing on the Fanthorp’s involvement in the Texas Revolution. You might also want to try your luck at the games played by Fanthorp’s guests back in 1836. On Saturday only, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. you can hop aboard the replica stagecoach and experience Republic Era travel for yourself. Historic interpreters will be dressed in authentic 1830s attire to help immerse guests into the experience of frontier travel. Admission is free and open to the public. The San Jacinto Ball at the Fanthorp Inn

Fill up your dance card April 9, from 6-9 p.m. at Fanthorp as they celebrate Texas Independence with authentic music, dancing, games, and libations during the San Jacinto Ball.

“In April of 1851 Henry Fanthorp threw a grand ball at the inn where over 150 people toasted to the victory of the Texians at San Jacinto in 1836. This year you are invited to celebrate that victory at the inn once again,” said Wahrmund.

You can expect historically inspired charcuterie, period games, and live music with called dances courtesy of Buttermilk Junction. There will also be a bar serving many of Fanthorp’s favorite drinks: wine, beer, whiskey, and rum. Come dressed to celebrate Texas Independence, period attire is welcome but not required. Tickets are $75 each and are available to those 21 and up.
