City soccer response 'good news!'

Navasota City Manager Jason Weeks shared some “good news” concerning the City’s efforts to provide soccer for Grimes County children this fall. At the Monday, Aug. 22, Regular Meeting of the Navasota City Council, Weeks announced that 50 children have signed up since registration began Friday, Aug. 19. He anticipates that number to increase before registration closes Aug. 31 Recapping the events which led to the City’s involvement, Weeks said, “City staff had found out that the Grimes County Soccer Association wasn’t able to host a season this fall so staff stepped in and we had a meeting last week. We had a public meeting and probably half the council chambers was filled with parents, volunteers and our staff as well.” Since Friday, the City has registered two-3 year olds, 26-age 4-6, 17-age 7-10 and five-11-15 years. He continued, “The good thing is we have 11 volunteers.”
According to Weeks, the teams will be coed, the city will charge a $30 fee and provide each player with a T-shirt. Each team’s shirt will be a different color.
Navasota ISD coaches are prohibited from coaching by UIL rules but will be providing a clinic on soccer basics. Play begins at Logan Sechelski Fields at August Horst Park Sept. 24 and ends the last weekend in October.
Weeks said there are a few issues to be worked out related to the weeknight game schedule, but salaried staff have Saturday covered.

Animal ordinance revised
Council approved the first reading of Ordinance 1001-22, amending Chapter 2 of the Animal Control Ordinance to clarify when a dog is deemed dangerous or vicious, and sets the terms for owning such an animal.
Resident complaints prompted the July 25 council workshop which resulted in a joint review of the ordinance by City legal counsel, the Municipal Court Judge and the Navasota Police Department.
Article 2.07 defines dangerous, aggressive and public nuisance dogs, addresses a dog causing death or bodily injury, requirements for owners of these dogs, violations, compliance and appeals. In addition, the maximum penalty was increased from $200 to $2,000.
Other council action:
•Approved Resolution 716-22, accepting the lift station and sewer improvements in Phase III, Sections two and three in Pecan Lakes Estates.
•Approved the date of Sept. 12, 2022, for the public hearing on the 2022-2023 proposed budget.
•Approved the request of the Christian Community Services Center for a $200 per month credit on their utility account for 2022-2023.
•Reconvening after meeting in Executive Session in accordance with Section 551.072, Texas Government Code, council approved authorizing the city manager to engage in negotiating with both Navasota WiFI and Grimes County.NET for non-exclusive license agreements and to present the proposed license agreements for award by the city council at a future meeting. It was further moved that this action shall not be deemed an award for either proposal under the Water Tower Space Licensing Policy.

•Received updates from Streets and Sanitation Director Jose Coronilla on sidewalk projects on Brosig and Washington Avenue between Eighth-Tenth Streets.
