Evergreen Baptist celebrates graduates
The big news this week was the house fire on FM 244. The house that belonged to Shirley Douthitt Keown caught fire Wednesday, May 19, about 2 a.m. and burned to the ground. The mobile home beside it was saved. Neither the house or mobile home have been lived in for some time. Iola Fire Department responded to the fire.
We certainly had a good amount of rain Thursday, May 18. Approximately three-inches fell according to my gauge. I understand more is on the way.
The membership of Evergreen Baptist Church honored its graduating seniors May 23, with a special church service. Eight students received gifts and a picture of them as a baby and a teenager. The church pastor, Rev. Jeff Morgan, brought a special message in their honor. The seniors are Alyssa Marie Costello, Ayden Matthew Costello, Makenzie Diane Mitts, Robert Louis Perez Jr., Baylei Jane Morgan, Spencer Nowell Quinlin, Colby Lane Sechelski and Brooke Elizabeth Smithey. There was a special remembrance of Tyler Anthony Compian, who would have been in the class of 2021 but died at birth in 2003.
Following the service, the church and visitors enjoyed a meal of hamburgers, hotdogs and other goodies in the fellowship hall. There was a good number of members and visitors present to wish the seniors well.
Congratulations to Elissa Perez and family on the birth of her son, David Romero Perez. He was born May 19, and weighed seven-pounds, four-ounces.
As of now, there will be no more Wednesday night meals served at Evergreen Baptist Church until the beginning of next school year in August. The church services will be from 7-8 p.m. There will be church classes for all ages. No service will be held Wednesday, June 9, because of the Grimes County Fair.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 24, for Michael Dennis Laird Jr. in Conroe. He was born in Houston Dec. 10, 1972, the son of Michael Dennis Sr. and Linda Coborn Laird who survive him. Also surviving him is his brother Kevin Wayne Laird and other family members. His burial was held in Martins Prairie Cemetery. He died May 18. Do remember his parents and other loved ones in your prayers.
The monthly meeting of the Iola-North Zulch Order of the Eastern Star No 458 was held at their lodge hall in North Zulch Monday, May 24 with a good number of members and visitors in attendance. The covered dish meal was enjoyed by all in attendance. Their meeting followed with a good deal of business discussed and acted upon.
