I like to remind senior citizens 60 years and older to check out the Grimes County Senior Center on Main Street in Anderson. The center, coordinated and operated by Evelyn Szymczak, is open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. three days a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Senior citizens can visit and have lunch for a $3 donation and participate in activities such as bingo, dominos, quilting, nutritional education and sometimes exercise.

Once a year the center has a raffle fundraiser and this year it will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9. A hot dog lunch with condiments, a bag of chips, a soft drink or water and a dessert will be available to purchase for $10. For $12, you can get all of the above except with 2 hot dogs. Funds raised keep the center running and supplies for meals. It’s important that we support this center to give our elderly a place to congregate and have fellowship.

Raffle prizes include a handmade quilt made by the Sunshine Quilters; two round bales of hay from Hershel Perry; $200 photo shoot by Chere’ Davis; 25 pounds of hamburger meat from K&C Processing; $100 gift card from First National Bank of Anderson; $100 Wal-Mart gift card from Patria Murray; $40 dog grooming gift basket from Cathy’s Dog Grooming; $50 gift certificate from Juan & Linda’s Restaurant; a fall wreath made by Evelyn Szymczak; a miscellaneous Avon basket from Gail Sowell; $50 gift certificate from Fifty-Seven Bloom Flower Shop; combination wrench set from Anderson Auto Supply; Rtic soft bag cooler with miscellaneous items from Citizens Bank; two large chicken fried steaks from Kott’s Café; $20 gift certificate from Courthouse Cleaners. Tickets are $1 each or a book of six tickets for $5. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the center, 936-873-2818.

The Knights of Columbus Council #4054 will hold another blood drive on Sunday, Aug. 20 at the St. Stanislaus Parish Hall from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. If you are able to give the “gift of life” please sign up at www. commitforlife.org and enter the code STKR.

Tommy and Barbara Szymczak celebrated their golden wedding anniversary July 14. Yes, 50 years of marital bliss. In honor of this occasion, their two sons, Gerard and Eric Szymczak and Barbara’s sister, Vickey Gurka, threw together a small “family only” party at their home July 16 – just brothers, sisters and their spouses.

Vickey went “over the top” with decorations and even got Tommy and Barbara matching t-shirts to wear that read, “Just Married – 50 years ago.” Those in attendance enjoyed a delicious fajita meal, homemade Italian Cream cake and homemade cookies. The highlight of this event were surprise videos from many years ago that were found, and Eric transformed into a modern way to show them on TV (I’m not technically savvy on this topic). They enjoyed videos from the weddings of Tommy and Barbara as well as his brothers’ Marion and Evelyn and Leonard and LaNell. There were also clips on the videos of their parents, aunts and uncles and other family members that have long since passed away. Congratulations to this sweet couple.

Happy Birthday to those celebrating this week: July 27 – Bristol Cosby; July 28 – Rachel Muegge, Emily Jones, Preston Szymanski, Shawn VanHorn; July 29 – Angela Moritz, Haylee Burzynski, Jackie Watson; July 30 – Dave Waitz, Melissa Ojeda, Christy Harper; Aug. 1 – Dylan Bohnert, Lillie Hejny; Aug. 2 – Michael Pasket, Jamie Mock, Dominic Adamo, Kristina Castro.

Happy Anniversary to those celebrating this week: July 28 – Michael and Susan Wisnoski, 44 years; July 31 – Travis and Lori Cobb, 19 years; and Aug. 1 – James and Ann Smith, 59 years.
