Richards VFD serves it up

Richards VFD has been busy responding to fires, emergencies and planning their biggest annual fundraiser.
The RVFD Annual BBQ and Auction is attended by many and an event the Richards Community looks forward to. Made possible strictly by donations, the event funds 25% or more of the volunteer groups efforts to respond to emergencies ranging from small grass fires to critical rescues. Between normal weekly activities that include skills development and hands on training, RVFD also partnered with Grimes County and Keep Grimes County Beautiful to provide a Fall Clean Up event.
The group also brought on a 2,000-gallon tanker to help with water hauls and service calls. “The truck allows us to respond more efficiently, with this we can provide better services,” explained Chief Norwood. “It also helps with our ISO rating and allows homeowners in our area to receive and maintain homeowners’ insurance.” The 2,000-gallon tanker truck will cost the department a total of $13,000 yearly. “While getting the truck is good for us, we need more man power drivers specifically, so we can provide as much force as possible,” said Norwood.
Saturday’s event will help raise community awareness, much needed funds, give the public a chance to tour facilities, eat good BBQ and become a part of the RVFD team. The fundraiser begins at 9 a.m. with the auction at noon. RVFD welcomes everyone to purchase a plate, help serve and help clean up.
Normally voters in precinct 5 for Montgomery County, would vote at the Longstreet Community Center, now due to damage from an accident, anyone living in Richards in the Montgomery County area will be voting at Union Grove Baptist Church. Montgomery County voters will vote two ballots: one ballot for both statewide and county-based races, and a second ballot (should they chose) to vote for RISD Trustee positions 1,3,4. If in the Grimes County area, Richards voters will cast their ballot at Richards VFD, and their ballot will contain races from U.S. Representative District 10 to Richards ISD School Board Trustee Places 1,3, and 4. RISD has not had trustee positions in an election for several years, and while the 2021 Bond approval was a pleasant surprise the district is bracing itself for many expected changes over the upcoming months and years.
