Last week I forgot to mention that each year when Don and I go to the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas conference, we always take a silent auction item. We like to take something from our county and this year we asked 17-year-old Landon Jarvis, son of Constable Blake and Aleida Jarvis, to make a special handmade knife for the occasion.

Growing up in a law enforcement family, Landon took special pride building the knife to honor men and women of law enforcement. He crafted the handle of burnt oak wood found on his home place and inlaid it with a blue epoxy resin. He imbedded Sheriffs’ Association of Texas badges on both sides as in his words “to blend the thin blue line in the design.” He self-taught himself using YouTube to make knives last year and made the blade of 1095 steel quenched for peak performance. Don and I were very proud as his knife sold for $350. Landon is going into his senior year at Anderson-Shiro and is also enrolled in an aviation school taking flying lessons with aspirations of becoming a commercial pilot. Thank you, Landon for making us proud to represent Grimes County.

I received a message from Patricia Cozby who is now in charge of the Grimes County Mobile Food Bank. She took the place of Chris Albright and wanted to inform me that because the food truck is having a hard time getting to the fairgrounds on time, the time has changed. Any resident of Grimes County will be served and will only need to show their driver’s license when they complete the once-a-year Client Assistant Intake form. For more information contact Patricia, jimcozby@gmail.com.
