Hundreds of Thanksgiving meals distributed
Brenda Storey and I helped for a few hours at the Progressive Center on the rainy Saturday we had last weekend. A group of people from Navasota City Mission organize, prepare, bake and donate a Thanksgiving meal each year. Anyone can come in and get two plates of food to either eat at the center or elsewhere. I am not for sure the exact amount of plates that were made, but it was well over 700.
They begin serving at 11 a.m. and we were out of food before 12:30 p.m. Everyone knew their duties, and it ran really smoothly. Even though we may have run into each other a few times in the kitchen, everyone kept dishing out food. Some members delivered food to elderly people who couldn’t come to the center. Mrs. Jessie and Peggy Johnson, both VFW Auxiliary life members have always worked for this cause. Even at her age, Mrs. Verdell delivers plates to those in need. This is a wonderful sharing and caring project that they do each year and I commend them for a job well done.
Highway 6, southbound, was a nightmare Tuesday. I made a trip to Lyons after my shopping adventure, I came home thru Brenham. My daughters worry that I will encounter a deer on my way home if I go thru William Penn, and cell service can be sketchy at times.
Thanksgiving Day was not the usual celebration. Butch was not here to call Joni to check if the turkey was done and neither Kacie nor I had to deliver a large bag of leftovers to him afterwards. He always arranged to have “redneck” Tupperware ready for pick up, too. The Lawrence boys all travelled to Montgomery to eat with Little John, Kacie was sick and Paige, Little Man and I went to Lyons. Little Man finally was able to meet two of the bonus great-grandchildren. I am glad he didn’t see one try to take his tractor from me. He is pretty good at sharing since he is not old enough to understand what is really going on just yet.
The tree is partially decorated. I decided to get most of my Christmas decorating done before the wedding because after that I begin my baking for nurses. For some reason, I developed the idea to acknowledge nurses. Shucks, I could spend an entire day delivering goodies at Scott & White since I have used so many of their doctors! If it makes them smile, then so be it!
