First Baptist Church in Navasota hosted their inaugural chili cookoff, Sept. 14. Award winners include Dustin and Shelby McGee, Best Chili without Beans; Team Magallon, Best Chili with Beans; and Joe and Lauren Puhar, Popular Choice Award. The cookoff benefits the Building on the Foundation Campaign. Judges included Navasota Mayor Bert Miller, Examiner Publisher Ana Cosino and P&Z member Dia Copeland.

There were 326 students who participated in the inaugural Grimes County Elections Sticker Contest. Students designed custom stickers for two categories – “Future Voters” and “I Voted.” Awards were presented to the top–10 finalists in each category and to the top-three in each contest. Easton Walkoviak placed first in the “Future Voter” category. He is a fifth grader at Anderson–Shiro Elementary. Brailey Harman earned first place in the “I voted” category. She is a seventh grader at Allen Academy. Winning sticker designs will be used during elections until the next contest in 2026.

At the Sept. 18 Grimes County commissioners court workshop, County Engineer Jon Steiber presented his proposed timeline toward a vote on adoption of International Residential Code (IRC) 2021. Steiber said a 22-person development review committee comprised of builders, developers, lawyers and realtors nominated by commissioners, met recently and favored adoption; however, one member preferred to focus on national codes. Steiber said that Grimes County is authorized to adopt the IRC only.
