Anderson–Shiro alumni, Duncan Benton, was named to the Centenary College Dean’s List for the Fall 2024 semester. The school in Shreveport, Louisiana honors students who achieved a grade–point average of 3.5 or higher with a minimum of 12 semester hours. Benton is the son of Carter and Dr. Jamie Benton of Anderson.
LONGVIEW — Hannah Taylor of Richards made the Fall 2024 Dean's List at LeTourneau University. The Dean's List recognizes students who achieved a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.99 for the semester. She is a Psychology major.
Plantersville Board of Aldermen moved through a packed list of “to dos” during their first meeting of 2025, Jan. 20. Among other city concerns, leaders addressed 16 agenda items including elections, road work and maintenance, grant money applications and the creation of a city pamphlet for citizens delineating open meetings procedures.

One week ago, the City of Navasota, the Navasota Police Department and our community lost one of our bravest and best. There is a hole in our hearts that cannot be repaired. There is no fixing this. We can’t go back in time to change things. But yet, the heartbreak is ever so palpable, it weighs on us like a dark cloud of heavy sadness, thick as a brick. We grieve the loss as if it was one of our own family members.
I had a different article I was going to write about this week but considering the circumstances of the recent loss of one of our hometown heroes, Navasota Police Department Sgt. Mark Butler, I chose to write about something more appropriate and will come back to that one another day.
The Texas Senate’s chief budget writer said state agencies and higher-education institutions have requested nearly $25 billion in funding as the legislative session gets underway. State Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Houston, told The Dallas Morning News the requests for new money reflect the growing functions and purposes of state agencies that serve the public.
Was there a Texas Famine in the drought years of 1885 through 1888? The Handbook of Texas makes no mention of famine at that time. It only refers to a blizzard in the fall of 1886 into 1887 that covered the Great Plains in more than 16 inches of snow with temperatures dropping to nearly 50 below.
Rosa Annette Finke, 84, of Navasota, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at Navasota Nursing and Rehab. Visitation with family and friends will be held Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at Salem Lutheran Church Whitehall from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Salem Lutheran Church Whitehall Cemetery with Pastor Corey Christians officiating.
Funeral services for Beverly McGinty 64 of Navasota will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday February 1, 2025, at True Vine Missionary Baptist Church, 1005 Noland Street, in Navasota. Burial will follow in the McDonald Cemetery. Visitation will be the same day as funeral beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the church.

Bonnie Jean Wehmeyer Lanford, 90, of Navasota, passed away Tuesday, January 14. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until the service time on Friday, January 17, at 11:00 a.m., in Oakland Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
